As a trainer at Les Mills, he knew there'd be a few of his friends and regular Hiit and Functional class members looking for a workout, and on the first day of lockdown Gaz went Live, from his lawn, for a 2.5 hour workout with the early beginnings of his online fitness community. This was episode 1 of Live on the Lawn, and with a few tweaks and adapting to an ever changing world he quickly developed a series of Daily Live follow along workouts available for free via Instagram, every day for over 50 days, and then with the re-emergence of New Zealand following lockdown, Gary continued to deliver online workouts and now boasts over 70 follow along workouts on his Instagram account via IGTV and these workouts range from 15 minute bodyweight, to 40 minute upper body, 40 minute full body, and 30 minute workouts.
With a focus on hypertrophy and strength training, with limited equipment, members from around the world joined in every day to "get that squeeze and get it done".
Over this time, companies started to also get involved. Gary went on to deliver Live instagram workouts for leading NZ Sports Store - Stirling Sports, as well as leading kiwi brands such as My Food Bag, delivered HIIT workouts for the biggest gym in New Zealand - Les Mills, and now proudly wears Under Armour for all his workouts and has represented Under Armour in a series of Auckland based fitness competitions, and has also now delivered follow along workout videos to a range of companies such as Shopify and Fresh Start Fit, where these videos have been used for their online community, e-letters, as well as internal conferences as fun team building activity for all participants.
One of the greatest aspects of training in a gym is the community of people, and in a short space of time, Gary was able to rally his community together to continue training, to stay connected with the outside world whilst staying at home, and to deliver a daily activity at 8am throughout the lockdowns to keep people motivated and active. Not all members had the same equipment, and creative solutions were found to kettlebells and dumbbells.
Training at home is not easy. There are distractions, there is limited equipment and there isn't the same energy that walking in to a big gym delivers. But Gary turned all of that around and delivered it through a screen with a high energy workout illustrating a range of angles and exercises that can be done to hit every body part in a concise 40 minute workout where the focus isn't on how many reps, but specifically on time under tension.
These workouts are fun, informative, available for people of all levels, and make you feel like you're part of a team.
Now New Zealand has been through 2 x lockdowns, and in both lockdowns, Live on the lawn delivered an online workout for a very confused, concerned community, and gave us all a break from reality. Together, we moved and we moved with friends from near and far, and if you're in a position where you're looking to train from home, the gym, the hotel or even the park with no equipment at all, check out the videos online at
To those who are about to hit any of these workouts, go hard, get that squeeze and GET IT DONE!
