Our expert hiking ambassador Kate Donald reviews her favourite ultralight ideal camp kitchen set up by Sea To Summit - The Sigma Cookset 1:1.

In the distance, the slight silhouette of a hut catches my eye, home for an evening. Motivated by the thought of a hot meal, my exhausted body pushes on with newfound energy. Guided by the lines of the open plains, a short walk with my grumbling stomach; step-by-step. Soon to be arriving at the little weathered house, nestled between gumtrees that border the grasslands.

Dropping my pack onto the porch of the hut, instant relief from the weight, and an end to a big day on the trail. Reaching immediately for my Sigma Cookset by Sea to Summit, my essential on all solo adventures, I start the process of making dinner in the evening sun. My home-made dehydrated bolognese goes into the Deltalight bowl to begin the rehydration process, while I begin to boil water on the pot for a cup of tea. A moment of pure relaxation as steam creeps through the vents in the lid, patiently waiting for that it to ‘jump’, a climax of every boil, a sign the water is piping hot. Pouring it into the insulated Insul Mug, a sigh, and smile of liberation after a long days hiking, reflected upon in this gentle moment. Relaxing onto the weatherboards, I breathe in deep and inhale my surroundings; Red Robin’s jump from branch to branch watching my every move with curiosity, whilst a wild pig slowly shuffles its way on the other side of the creek. Pausing, as I sip, just hoping the enticing smell of dinner won’t attract him. The simplicity of a cooked meal and a cup of tea in this mountain oasis is my idea of time spent well.

The Sigma Cookset (1.1) permanently lives in my pack ready for any hike. The Delta Light Insul Mug and Delta Light Bowl sit perfectly in the stainless steel pot, making packing a breeze. The Sigma pot features a Pivot-Lock stow away handle that locks the lid to the pot, ensuring the entire set remains secure inside, whilst takes up minimal space. Made from durable stainless steel, with an abrasion-resistant polish to avoid scratches forming from rough cooking and cleaning, the set is made to last. The slotted pattern on the lid makes straining simple, and the silicone Lid-Keep is a clever little design feature to rest the lid easily on the for simmering meals. This set is designed for the hiking chef, with graded-scales on both the bowl and the pot for precise measurement, convenient for rehydrating meals to the instructions. All you need to add is a stove and gas canister to complete your lightweight camp kitchen.

Hit the trail feeling prepared with your cook-set ready to go for any hot meal; breakfast, lunch, and dinner, without feeling the strain of the extra weight of carrying a complete kitchen. Enjoy the creature comforts on your next overnight hike, the solace found in a simple cup of tea or warmth a hearty bowl of Bolognese can provide when camping out in a tent.
